What an amazing story. So beautifully written, scene and emotions... I could image and drawing picture while reading. But... my heart ached so much. Regretting reading in public space. You have done amazing Ryan. Really hope your friends are ok.

Ryan: What a story of discovery, hope - and hopes dashed. For Edwin - and for the spark - Nestor. Nestor now lost to Termales in distant, and I imagine, dangerous, El Salvador. Maybe there is a possibility for sending a donation to Nestor? But because of the spark of Nestor - all those young people still finding their way into life via surfing - and bravo for your own part in all of that - even though you - like me - grew up far from the coast.

And your project for which you are taking a break from "Out of Office" - best wishes. Funnily enough just last week I completed a project just short of your aim (i.e. 66,000+ words) a tribute to the passing of a Shintō priest mate in Japan (for his widow and sons) wrapped in a kind of memoir of my final five years in Japan and three brief subsequent visits. It took me 16 months - of no literary merit - but a record of an important friendship which spun me deeper into an understanding of that country and its spiritual links to the passing of the seasons - prayers of propitiation and prayers of thanksgiving... !Mucha suerte con su escribiendo, Ryan! (!Y también a Nestor!)

So should I wish to donate the widow's mite to Nestor - what is the link? Have you already mentioned it? Sorry if I've missed something... By October (best wishes in keeping to your plan - though I must say you strike me as disciplined) we'll be somewhere in the States (as in the US) around then...my wife busy now planning the places we'll visit...but its ranging Vernon BC, lower upstate NY - Philadephia/Washington DC and Fort Myers in Florida - then somehow diagonally back across the centre to Vancouver BC and home...
