In 30 + years of caring for the dying .. what people talk about and value as they face finishing their life here …is their loved ones ,their experiences and their friends NOT their money ,houses , work.
It must be true if Bob said it. I was actually going to use one of his lyrics for the title of this post, There's No Success Like Failure. In the end I didn't because I used one of his lyrics for the last post's title. Though I suspect that Bob would approve of my pilfering and recycling of lyrics. Thanks for reading.
I find the written word helps convey more of the meaning and better for my senses, audio I find the nuances of speech and tone sometimes distracting and find my mind wanders more. I do love listening to podcasts while walking but choose the less important ones knowing I will be distracted
Another great thought-provoking article Ryan! :) Yes for the audio option. I do more often read (just to appreciate and think about your content in a more thoughtful way) but I have listened to your audio while having a shower! (is that oversharing. LOL)
An ex Lord Mayor of Adelaide City came to work today and talked to us about how he is always uncomfortable with being comfortable, which so resonated with me! Reinventing ourselves as part of self discovery, and if reinvention is part of way of living, then success seems always more about the process and implementation of reinvention itself, rather than the output and outcome of reinvention.
I love reading your written word but I also love listening to the podcast. I really missed it when you didn’t record it on the past couple of occasions. Thanks for your insights.
I don’t do well with podcasts or audiobooks because my mind wanders. That said, I have listened to a couple of your voiceovers and really enjoyed them. That’s probably not much help!😂
About ten years ago I stopped climbing the “corporate ladder.” I began focusing more on the people in my life and less on my career. Best decision I ever made. My life is one of purpose. I may not have oodles of money stockpiled. I don’t drive a fancy car or live in a modern home, but I love people well. And that is a purposeful life.
Good on you Holly. Was it hard to get off the ladder? What made you take that step? I know so many people who would love to buy always find a reason not to.
In some ways, yes. I think I was always trying to prove myself in my work environment (I have different theories on this, but too much to go into right now) and was in a bad marriage--so I let my work define my worth. Until one day when I didn't. I realized that in the end the relationships that mattered the most were not made in the office--they were with my kids, close family, and friends. I also found purpose in volunteer work. I was making a real difference in the lives of others through that work, and it felt so much more purposeful.
I've kept my meager "analyst" job title for years. I hate the politics of management and have told my supervisors I never want a title that ends in "or" or "er." I want to do the work I enjoy, lead from where I am, and turn off the laptop at the end of the day. Happiest I've ever been!
Well a colleague keeps suggesting we do a podcast “from the ground” perspective and not medical .. but when you start your podcast maybe we can be guests ..
Hi Ryan
Yes I like the audio option too .
In 30 + years of caring for the dying .. what people talk about and value as they face finishing their life here …is their loved ones ,their experiences and their friends NOT their money ,houses , work.
So from my experience your values are on track ..

It's funny how we all know this and yet seem to ignore it as we go through life. Maybe you have a podcast in you?
I only, last night asked my Dad (77 years old and framing since his teens):
"Do you ever wake up in the morning not looking forward to going to work?"
His answer - "Never - I always have 3 projects on the go so I can choose what I feel like doing each
day"
Now there's some good advice!
Bob Dylan once said "a man is a success if he wakes up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between he does what he wants to do."
A similar sentiment, albeit one slightly dismissive of determined night shift workers.

Thanks Reece. I do feel my confident writing rather than reading.
Love the audio!
Thank you! ❤
I didn't listen sorry as I love the way your words look on the page.
Thanks Brigid!
I like your recording, don’t end the podcast dream just now.
Thanks A-Lo. The Flame is burning. I have an idea for next year.
So brave.

I just don't know how the logistics of listening in the shower would work! 🤣
Hi Ryan
I love reading your written word but I also love listening to the podcast. I really missed it when you didn’t record it on the past couple of occasions. Thanks for your insights.
Thanks Tanya. Well, I will make sure not to miss any more in future! Thanks for listening.
Another great piece Ryan. Each of us chases our own version of success / purpose.
What I’m reminded about is the following lesson - if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will always be a failure.
Keep doing what fills your heart and mind with happiness buddy
Some people chase premierships well into their 40s! 😉
I didn’t know you didn’t record. Slack, I mean I am, I didn’t know it😅 but I like to hear your voice. What’s successful means Ryan?
Pretty much what you do Atsuko. Living your life on your own terms, forging ahead.

I love reading, but I also love being read to. Especially when what is being read to me is worth listening to ...
Thank you for the kind words India. ❤
Hey mate, great to hear your voice and to picture you narrating your experiences…like having a conversation. Keep it going. Best wishes
Thanks, Raju. I appreciate that.
